NEWS that the respite grant for carers would not be means-tested came as a welcome relief to the many unpaid carers.

But was it too good to be true? Oh, yes, it was. A carer could only qualify provided she or he didn’t work for more than ten hours per week outside the home.

For those of us who work tirelessly caring for our elderly and handicapped people, and receive nothing for our many hours of frequently thankless work, this was another blow to our weary souls.
