From Kevin Barry to Stalin. Where next?

RYLE DWYER’s slip is showing.

That little piece of artifice, cut from the cloth of nationalism, which was once so beguiling, but is beginning to look tawdry and frayed at the edges.

How else to fathom his latest column (Irish Examiner, June 21), a seamless piece covering Kevin Barry, Stalin, the Black and Tans and Iran's desperate need to father a bouncing baby boy a holy nuclear terror, no less to keep up with the Joneses (or the neighbouring Finkelsteins perhaps).

Resisting the temptation to try on his natty little number for size, instead I ambled out into the dead of night and pointed my camera at the furthest reaches of the Universe.

And I wished that I could make some sense of Ryle's historical reel of memory before my single flash of light was swallowed up by a dirty black hole in the deepest pools of outer space.
