Summit fails the poor of the world yet again

TP O’MAHONY is correct (Irish Examiner, Saturday, Sept 7). The Johannesburg summit did indeed fail to free the poor of the world from poverty.

Once again, the world’s leaders have assembled, at phenomenal expense, and once again they have failed to achieve anything that will have any effect on the miserable lives of the poor.

The attitude of the wealthy countries, and that includes us, is contributing to the catastrophe of hundreds of thousands of people dying daily because we are not prepared to share the ample wealth of this world.

Perhaps more than food, water, shelter, medicines and education, the poorest of the poor need someone to take up their cause on the world stage, a champion who has the guts and the ability to shame the world into taking action rather than making yet more empty promises.
