History reminds us of the fragility of peace

THE D-Day ceremonies were deeply moving. As someone who grew up in a Europe which was not at war with itself, it is good to be reminded how fragile peace is and how lucky we are.

Similar accounts were the order of the day. None of the veterans seemed to hate their enemy but behind every war there are the politicians. It has often intrigued me how so few leaders can make such a huge mass of people go out and kill each other on their behalf.

If world leaders were really serious about honouring war dead, they would be doing everything in their power to ensure there are no more of them.
