Be cruel with cigarette prices

THE budget this week can potentially contribute to saving the lives of thousands of people if it incorporates a significant price increase on tobacco products.

ASH Ireland has sent a detailed submission to the Minister for Finance clearly outlining the justification for a 2 increase on a pack of 20 cigarettes and related products.

All relevant research indicates that significant price increase is the best means of encouraging smokers to quit and discouraging young people from taking up the habit.
