Peace marchers were treated with contempt
An Irish civilian airport was visibly militarised to facilitate the war machine of a foreign power.
However, what happened last Saturday was even more disgraceful and makes one wonder how much respect the Government has for peaceful protesters. The broad-based Cork Anti-War Campaign is affiliated to the similarly constituted Irish Anti-War Movement (IAWM)
On the edge of Shannon town our buses were stopped at a Garda checkpoint and searched, while in the town centre we were faced with an astounding show of force, including gardai on horseback. Worse followed at the airport, which was saturated with gardai.
The expenditure must have been enormous, and all to maintain an American military presence despite the objections of tens of thousands of Irish citizens. The Government treated the 100,000 people who marched in Dublin with contempt and they repeated the exercise last Saturday.
