Focus on funding and forget school rankings

I WRITE as a teacher in a non-fee-paying voluntary secondary school whose three daughters aggregated 1,550 points in their Leaving Cert exams in the local community college in Firhouse, Dublin.

I think that a number of factors should be borne in mind when comparing schools on the basis of how many of their pupils go to university.

1. Some private schools admit, in a shamelessly elitist manner, only the best academic performers from primary schools. That these students do well in their Leaving Cert does not indicate a better school.
