From a name to a slur

ANNE CADWALLADER’S article on ethnic cleansing in Belfast (Irish Examiner, September 15) shows that not much has changed in over 200 years, even down to referring to Catholics as Taigs.

From a name to a slur

This is not rhyming slang for “plague” as Ms Cadwallader says.

It is merely the Northern pronunciation for the personal name Tadgh.

Conchubhar Ó hÉalaithe,

Driseán,

Sráid An Mhuilinn,

Co Chorcaí.
