THE Government deserves praise for a superb performance in the EU presidency.

A job well done

The Taoiseach, against considerable odds, secured agreement on a new constitution and hosted a successful EU/US summit at which many of the sores opened by the Iraq war between Europe and the US were healed.

And the Taoiseach’s final flourish was to clinch an agreement on the man to become the first EU commission president. Not bad. Not bad at all.
