I WAS sickened to read the description and view the photographs of the cruel slaughter of thousands of pigs on a Waterford farm recently.

Devil in disguise

The knowledge that government officials oversaw people killing defenceless animals with sledgehammers makes the sorry story even more depressing.

After viewing this disgusting scene a quote from William Ralph Inge sprang to mind: “We have enslaved the rest of the animal creation, and have treated our distant cousins in fur and feathers so badly that, without doubt, if they were able to formulate a religion they would depict the Devil in human form.”
