1916 Rising gave hope to people everywhere

THE year 1916 changed the history of Ireland forever. The echo of 1916 went around the world and gave hope and inspiration to oppressed people everywhere.

The 1916 Proclamation would stand up with any of the world’s great documents.

In many ways, it was a document before its time. It put women on the same level as men. In its very first line it addressed Irish men and Irish women, although at that time women had no vote.

It was the sense of pride and self-respect inculcated in the people by the Rising which enabled the Irish to successfully resist conscription in 1917-18, saving the lives of thousands of young Irish lads.

Let us hope that in the 90th anniversary of the 1916 Rising, the Irish people will show their respect and admiration for the great people who took part in that rebellion.
