Bin protesters want someone else to pay

THE furore over the jailing of Joe Higgins and Clare Daly is serving to obscure the central illogicality of the anti-bin charges case.

Many years ago there was widespread delight at the economically and democratically fatuous decision to abolish the local rates, as if this in some way made all city and council services free.

Of course it did not; it merely altered the way in which they were funded.
