Independent garda watchdog now vital

IN view of the recent suffering of the McBrearty family, who were totally exonerated by the Morris Tribunal, surely it is time we had an independent body to watch over the gardaí.

When you also consider the serious questions surrounding the murder of Buncrana councillor Eddie Fullerton, you must wonder why Justice Minister Michael McDowell is resisting proposals for such an agency to monitor the gardaí?

Maybe it’s because he is expecting more shocking revelations of the kind revealed by the Morris Tribunal tounfold .
