The art of bluff – now let’s have a real critic

I WAS appalled by Hugh Farrelly’s recent article titled ‘The art of bluff’ (Irish Examiner, Jan 24).

The art of bluff – now let’s have a real critic

Though I would have many questions about the Cork Open, do not submit work to it, and am not a selector, I know it to be a serious, important and professionally run contemporary art event.

The people who determine the programme are informed, critical and put a lot of consideration into choosing the work. The artists who submit work are mostly of the younger generation who have studied for years and who are involved in the vital and lively process of creating art which reflects the values, fears and issues of the times we live in.

How is it, then, that this article was published as it was completely ignorant, completely uninformed, glib and insulting to the entire arts community, making Cork a showcase of ignorance?

There are a number of serious and experienced art writers in Cork. Where are their articles? Do you realise the damage you do to the artists, galleries, collectors, students and wider community by publishing this?
