True, were it not for their self-sacrifice, we would not have our present prosperity, yet they had more in mind than mere material wealth, however welcome. High ideals inspired them.

On the eve of his execution, the lifelong Fenian Tom Clarke told his wife Kathleen that the insurgents had “saved the soul of Ireland”.
