Tunnel to prove waste of space
After we, the residents of northside Dublin, having endured an unwanted and unwarranted project the Dublin Port access tunnel through our communities, comes the news that the tunnel will be too small to take many of the generation of super trucks in the first place.
According to the Irish Road Haulage Association and many other independent and non-biased people and organisations, up to 20% of all trucks will be too big to use the Dublin Port access tunnel when it opens as scheduled in two years' time.
So all of the pain and sacrifice and disruption that we residents of northside Dublin are suffering at the moment because of the construction of the Dublin Port access tunnel has all been in vain.
I hate to say, "I told you so", but this proves the argument that I and many others made against the construction of this Dublin Port access tunnel.
The Dublin Port access tunnel should be an east-west tunnel running under the River Liffey rather than the north-south monstrosity of an environmental eyesore and catastrophe that we are now getting.
Indeed they should be making better use of our railways to transport freight. It's much more environmentally friendly than transporting it by road.
There was a plan to have a National Freight Centre in Clondalkin and link it with railways but that got scuppered when this Dublin Port access tunnel was railroaded through.
