Garda murder case turned on a crucial detail

YOUR report states that no one was charged with the murder of Garda Richard Fallon (Irish Examiner, Dec 23).

Garda murder case turned on a crucial detail

In fact three men were tried and acquitted in two separate cases. In one of them a Mayo man was defended by the brilliant Sean MacBride, former IRA chief of staff and Minister for External Affairs.

A young garda swore that the robbers who shot Garda Fallon pushed the bank door out before them, but MacBride proved to the court that the door only opened in.

As the garda’s evidence was unreliable, the State case fell asunder and the man was acquitted.
