Main road has no place for walkers

RECENTLY I inspected the road from Anhid (a mile south of Croom in Co Limerick where there is a signpost for Granagh), south to Banogue, O’Rourke’s Cross and on to Charleville in Co Cork.

This stretch of the main Limerick- to-Cork road is not a dual carriageway and there are many roadside residences from Anhid to Charleville.

People living there have a right to visit their neighbours on foot using the main road, as all of us are paying for its upkeep.

However, as there is no provision made for pedestrians, it is not safe to walk on this road. While we are all entitled to use public roads, walkers, cyclists, those pushing prams and wheelchair users cannot exercise that right in safety, as provision is only made for motor vehicles.

Three feet of level road should be tarred inside the yellow markings on each side for the benefit of local people. Of course, all main roads should provide for all users in this way.
