Don’t tax a lifesaver

SUDDEN Arrhythmic Disease Syndrome (SADS) has become the focus of much attention and concern among sport organisations.

The recent death of the second member of the same family from SADS has dramatically highlighted the tragic consequences of the condition.

Sports clubs are being encouraged to buy automatic external defibrillators as a possible means of treating a person who might suffer such an attack.

The defibrillator device costs €2,200 a considerable burden on organisations with limited resources. The purchase price is subject to 21% VAT and this may well be the factor which will make the purchase impossible for some groups.

The Government should refund the VAT and thus facilitate the purchase of the machine by organisations that provide such valuable community service. Such a concession might save the life of a young sportsperson.
