Cause for alarm

THE threat to Irish supermarkets by the Aldis and the Lidls is very real.

It is also a threat to manufacturing jobs in the Irish food sector. Irish farmers should also feel alarmed.

The cost base/high inflation/high wage payouts provoked by the Governments’s largesse with one hand (public sector pay) and relentless trawl for new taxes (bins, etc) to finance their wastefulness will surely destroy the Irish economy. We can no longer devalue our overpriced currency.

Where I live, for example, I can buy a litre of UHT milk (full cream) for 45 cent. It is imported from Northern Spain (Galicia, Asturia, etc). Irish farmers can only prevent their eventual destruction either by introducing import levies and/or by leaving the EU.
