AS a lay theologian and historian, I was saddened to hear Bishop Murphy's judgment on parents he perceives as abusing the sacraments.

First, let's check what Jesus would have done

Other commentators have applauded his Easter message, many of whom assume that they are saved, just because they observe the laws of Christ outwardly.

What of the hypocrites who receive the sacraments but do not speak to mother, neighbour or colleagues? Or clergy who are not faithful to their vows? Are they given a special dispensation when it comes to the sacraments? Is the bishop implying that they are closer to salvation? If so, I would advise him to reopen the gospels and take a closer look at Christ's message of unconditional love for all, no conditions, no blackmail, no force. !
