WHAT a beautiful time of year. Such idyllic scenes of pastoral tranquillity in the countryside, as cows and sheep lazily graze the lush meadows.

Behind these tranquil images, however, there lurks a very ugly reality. Soon these gentle, timid animals, who never did any harm to anyone, will be forced on to trailers and trucks and begin their last journey.

Some of these journeys will be relatively short, while others will involve many hours, and sometimes days, of cramped and suffocating travel in purpose-built trucks and ships. All will end up experiencing the routine savagery of the slaughterhouse.
