It’s time to get real, professor

IN a recent article, Prof William Binchy is reported as having stated that “couples should be allowed to make a legally binding commitment, never to divorce” (Irish Examiner, August 26).

The article points out that Prof Binchy believes that the lack of choice in this matter is inconsistent with a person’s human rights, including freedom of expression, autonomy from the state, privacy and liberty.

Yet prior to the introduction of divorce in 1995 (which Prof Binchy opposed), we heard nothing from him about those who were trapped in dreadful, sometimes violent, marriages.
