Smoking crackdown

EWAN DUFFY’S wild claim that Iarnród Éireann is “oblivious” to the smoking ban (Irish Examiner letters, April 5) is simply wrong.

Smoking crackdown

Thanks to an extensive publicity campaign, notices in stations and announcements on trains, we have had a very high level of compliance with the smoking ban.

Where isolated incidents occur, we take action. Over 30 prosecutions were taken against individuals smoking on trains and in stations in 2004 - hardly the actions of an organisation “oblivious” to our responsibilities?

We are also exploring the feasibility of installing smoke detectors in train toilets.
