Commercial salmon netting must end
The remedies are obvious:
1) Cessation of all commercial drift and draft net fishing at sea and in estuaries;
2) Severe cutbacks in game angling and increased conservation;
3) Stringent salmon protection at sea and in rivers coupled with close monitoring of fresh water pollution levels;
4) Development work in breeding habitat areas to encourage increased spawning and breeding stocks.
Naturally, all existing commercial salmon fishermen who cease fishing must be fully compensated.
On a positive note, the current €200 million Cork main drainage scheme should result in a clean and attractive River Lee that hopefully will see a run of fresh salmon return.
