Another case of dubious credentials

The erstwhile ‘Dr’ Barry McSweeney has received quite a drubbing in the media recently.

However, has anybody thought to question the credentials of a well- known figure who bestrides the political scene in north-east Ulster and uses the titles ‘Dr’ and ‘Rev,’ famously described by John Hume as being neither a reverend nor a gentleman.

I was surprised at Tánaiste Mary Harney’s comparison between degree mills and honorary doctorates.

These latter are normally bestowed on people for outstanding lifetime achievements in the fields of business, arts, sport, etc. Recipients of this honour should use the title ‘Dr’ with pride.

Knighthoods are frequently conferred in our neighbouring island in return for substantial political donations and those so honoured are certainly not reluctant to use the title ‘Sir.’ A permanent political settlement in the North could well see a peerage bestowed on the aforementioned ‘Rev’ - a reward perhaps for four decades of bigotry.
