President should not have been invited

I WOULD have seen nothing wrong with President McAleese’s recent lecture at Westminster Cathedral if she was committed to upholding the teachings of the Catholic Church.

But this is the woman who received communion in a Protestant church and later said, on the Late, Late Show, that she had no regrets and would do it again.

She is also a member of BASIC, a group that spends most of its time arguing for women priests - and she has called for more rights for homosexuals.

Under these circumstances I feel it was a grave mistake to have her as a speaker in the cathedral.

It was also noticeable that she saw the occasion simply as an opportunity to ‘sell’ the EU constitution - “For Italy the signing ceremony of the European constitution and the funeral of John Paul II prove that even after two thousand years, all roads lead to Rome!”

The President is supposed to be above politics. It is shameful that she used the Catholic church in this manner and also that she got coverage for it from a Catholic newspaper.
