Bertie had better stick to second promise

I WAS pleased with the Taoiseach's recent commitment to the UN to give 0.7% of GNP to overseas aid by 2012.

Bertie had better stick to second promise

It is only right after his earlier promise to reach it by 2007 was reneged on. At least he is trying to make amends now, although he should have apologised at the UN to the world's poor for going back on his earlier solemn promise in 2000 to the same body.

His broken promise then was a betrayal of the poorest of the poor in the name of the Irish taxpayer. He should not have made the commitment if he was going to break it. It looks like he wanted the kudos without any of the responsibility.
