An Post funding not in breach of EU rules

AN POST needs funding and the Government should grant subventions to the postal services.

They have hidden for far too long behind the excuse that the funding of An Post would be in breach of EU competition rules. This is not so.

The EU commission has ruled that postal services have universal service obligations and governments can provide state aid to them as this is not a breach of EU competition rules.

An Post provides a very valuable social service.

One aspect of this is the rural post office which can never be profitable no matter how many cutbacks this Government tries to force on An Post
