All gardaí should speak two languages

IT is incredible that the Minister of Justice and Law Reform, a good speaker of Irish, would even consider, not to mind propose, the cancellation of a long-established regulation requiring for the gardaí a reasonable working knowledge of Irish.

It is our native tongue which is designated in our constitution as our first official language.

Anybody, Irish or not, who wishes to join the Garda Siochána should be required to learn the two languages spoken in this country.
