A MAN begging outside a church in Roscommon was convicted and penalties imposed (the Irish Examiner, March 22).

Inequity before the law beggars belief

On March 24, the Irish Examiner's report on the Moriarty Tribunal indicates that the most demanding beggar of all time was Charles Haughey. He continues to live in opulence, draws a State pension, and has the use of a State car with a garda chauffeur, all at taxpayers' expense.

It seems he is immune from prosecution.
