‘Operation Seagull’ is Bertie’s last chance

FOLLOWING their awful showing in the local elections and the loss of a seat in the recent by-elections, the Fianna Fáil leadership should realise it’s time for action to galvanise a jaded electorate.

‘Operation Seagull’ is Bertie’s last chance

Bertie Ahern must be casting envious eyes at some other leaders ... Tony Blair is ratcheting up the fear factor prior to the British election with his anti-terrorism bill following his co-invasion of Iraq, while Mr Bush, benefiting from his two invasions (Afghanistan and Iraq) cantered home in his last outing.

What, therefore, can the Taoiseach do before the next election? Well, there is one little matter which, if handled properly, could vastly improve his image.

In conjunction with the minister for defence he would still have time to organise a simple plan involving the Air Corps, a few paratroopers and the Naval Service armed with flags and a few poles. They could set out on a nice summer’s morning when the tide was right, reclaim Rockall for us, and sweep to an historic third-term in 2007!
