We need more than Soviet-style radio choice?

NORTH West Radio (NWR) closed down on October 1, or should I say that it was shut down by the Government body - The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland - and in its place we were given Ocean FM.

We lost not alone a radio station but very good friends whom we learned to admire and respect over the 14 years that NWR was on the air.

Local and national politicians for the area stayed silent on the issue. Why could we not be given a choice of both Ocean FM and North West Radio? Twenty years ago there was only one supermarket in Sligo as it was felt at the time that there was not enough business for two. Must we wait another 20 years to nail this lie, too, but, by then it will be far too late for NWR.

Having only one radio station leads to stagnation as there is no competition.

What we have is like the old Soviet Union where there was one radio station and one newspaper dedicated to government propaganda.
