Thought police havealready been defeated

MARY Gallagher’s excellent letter on Orwell’s prediction of political correctness (Irish Examiner, May 2) in regard to the ‘New Word Order’ article (Irish Examiner, April 30) speculates that the thought police will follow the language police.

It has, in fact, already arrived and been defeated. Corporate America failed in its effort to ban Michael Moore’s book Stupid White Men.

The publishers were under pressure to obstruct the publication but public opinion and support for the author forced them to change their minds.

The democratic right to freedom of expression in America was opposed by the Bush administration and defeated.
