Voluntary worker stunned by political expenses

I AGREE thoroughly with Brian Abbott (Irish Examiner, July 29) regarding minimum expenses for people who work for the community. I, too, was stunned to read of the sums of money received by county councillors.

Voluntary worker stunned by political expenses

I also thought one volunteered to go forward to become a councillor for the good of our community.

Alas, no. Self-interest comes first. One councillor clawed in over €75,000 and not an ounce of shame for doing so. I’m 69 and have been a voluntary worker since my teens, never expecting anything in return. There are many more like me.

I hope that come the local elections, we will only vote for those who agree to serve for minimum expenses and genuine loss of earnings at the average rate. Let us ignore those people who filled seats by nepotism.
