Statistical confusion

IN page 4 in your edition of Saturday, April 3, a news brief carried the headline ‘Unemployment up’.

Statistical confusion

On page 12, in your business section of the same edition, a report by David Clerkin had the heading ‘Jobless figures fall by over 4,200.’

On reading them it is obvious that both reports are based on the same set of figures but, obviously, a different interpretation is taken. It is a little cynical to be providing diametrically opposed headlines in different sections of the same edition. To the ordinary reader, it can be quite confusing.
