Pause for prayer

WHILE waiting for the RTÉ six o’clock news, I have to watch silent figures for a full minute.
Pause for prayer

This is RTÉ’s current television interpretation of the Angelus.

I have no objection to the Angelus on RTÉ or elsewhere, but I do object to being forced to watch these figures looking skyward as if the space shuttle were about to appear, while others suddenly cease whatever they are doing and blindly stare upward.

The former practice of using Christian icons and other relevant works of art to the sound of the Angelus bell seemed much more appropriate, dignified and in keeping with the subject.
