US is following the old imperial role models

AS a first-time visitor to Ireland, I was amazed to read the Irish-American Mary McMahon’s letter (Irish Examiner, June 30) which harshly criticised Irish people for displaying anti-Bush sentiments over US foreign policy.

US is following the old imperial role models

Why does she think that the world should support the USA in its imperial adventures? As someone of Irish descent I assume she would not support Britain’s post-colonial and imperial domination of Africa, Asia, the Middle East and not least, Ireland.

Just as was the case with the empires of Rome, Britain, France and Spain, so today the USA has fashioned itself in a similar role.

It imposes its culture on the world in terms of its films, TV, music, fashion, products and so forth. Its economy benefits hugely from its overseas markets, which dominate the world.

It is prepared to invade and occupy countries which do not comply with its foreign policy. It will connive with others to overthrow elected governments which do not concur with its interests and philosophy - just as it did in Chile by enthroning a dictator, Pinochet.

Mary McMahon should examine her beloved America.

She has a lot to learn.
