LAST week’s campaign by the gardaí against reckless motorists, following a spate of deaths on our roads, was yet another indication of the Government’s failure to combat the serious problem of road safety.

The 48-hour operation was aimed at saving lives and changing driver behaviour in the long term. Were we seriously expected to believe that a two-day garda crackdown was going to improve driving habits.

This type of operation has been used in the past, usually around Christmas or - as in this case - as a kneejerk reaction to an increase in road fatalities.
