Another Rwanda in the making
The war against the people of the Darfur region in western Sudan broke out last year and has escalated dramatically in recent months with two rebels groups the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) pitted against the government and its militias. Unarmed civilians are bearing the brunt of the conflict.
Wells are destroyed, villages and crops deliberately burnt and livestock taken away in a scorched earth policy. The attacks on unarmed civilians are just the start. There is a pattern of arbitrary executions, abductions and the systematic rape of women and girls. Thousands have died. More than a million people have fled their homes, according to the UN.
