The Singing Bridge

I APPLAUD Mairín Quill’s Suggestion of The Singing Bridge for the new crossing of the River Lee.

We have had more than enough of Murphy Bridge, Smith Bridge, Yer Man From The Ministry Bridge, What-D’ye-Ma-Call-It Bridge, Last Year’s Man of the Match Bridge.

Nobody remembers the correct name of any of these five minutes after they’ve been opened and the new one is going to be known as Coal Quay Bridge, whatever they christen it.

But Mairín’s idea is wonderful. It will convey better than anything else our musical Cork heritage. It is melodic, happy, and has a really good chance of being remembered by most of the people most of the time.
