What kind of test did road maniacs pass?
Maybe I’m wrong, but reversing around a corner while holding a mobile to one’s ear sounds like grounds for immediate failure - and yes, I saw someone doing exactly that the other morning. Isn’t 30mph the speed limit in a 30mph zone - and not 80, as I witnessed in near-icy conditions before Christmas?
And surely overtaking two cars simultaneously while approaching a dangerous bend on a continuous white line is illegal? When six people die in horrific crashes on a single day - as happened on Saturday, December 18 - it’s no longer a surprise.
Do we need a dead relative or partner - or a lucky escape - to make us wise up, or is it all the fault of the gardaí, as the particularly self-deluded among us would have us believe?
It’s clear that extra gardaí, penalty points and expensive advertising campaigns are not adequate deterrents for selfish drivers - neither is the possible death of another person. These people can clearly ‘live with the shame’ of killing or risking the lives of others.
To whatever test these road maniacs have passed, perhaps we could add a section about loss, grief and funerals.
