YOUR report on the suicide prevention conference in Belfast (Irish Examiner, August 26) mentioned the call for more mental health services to tackle this grave national problem.

Major national issue needs new approach

While I accept that there is a role for healthcare in relation to suicide, I believe it is essentially a non-medical matter.

The psychiatric and mental health professions largely portray suicide and suicidal thinking as an illness or disease that is primarily biological in origin.
