THE Belgian government is to be congratulated for not allowing the tobacco industry advertise its products via Formula One motor racing.

The response by the sport's governing body the cancellation of the Belgian Grand Prix underscores the power of the tobacco industry and, more worrying, the power of their advertising. The tobacco industry pays out some $350m per year for their high-speed billboards.

This is a clear indication of the marketing value of Formula One. There is no doubt who the advertising is aimed at our children and it works! The tobacco brand with the largest market share among Irish boys is that promoted by the Jordan team.

The Minister for Health and Children has the power to stop the broadcast of tobacco-sponsored Formula One on Irish TV it is time he used that power. Dr Fenton Howell,
