Preying on the parish

THE people of Cobh parish have contributed over €1 million to the restoration fund for St Colman’s Cathedral since 1992.

Now they find some of that money being used by the trustees of St Colman’s, not only to destroy the beautiful cathedral but also to fund the trustees’ team at the recent Bord Pleanála oral hearing.

As the parishioners were also funding the Friends of St Colman’s Cathedral, who were representing them, it would appear that Cobh parishioners were financing both sides at the oral hearing.

This is a disgraceful situation and should not be allowed. We gave our money in good faith that it would be used for the restoration and conservation of what is one of the most outstanding neo-gothic cathedrals in Ireland, and not to fund its destruction.

At the very least, our voices should be heard and taken into account, but, as one of the speakers at the hearing said, we are meant to ‘put up and shut up’.
