Amid all the culture, where’s the humour?

I READ with great interest the programme to celebrate Cork’s designation as European capital of culture. I look forward to a wonderful year of activity.

However, unless I missed something, there is one glaring omission. Though I have lived in Cork a mere 32 years, if I were asked to pick its outstanding cultural feature I would, without hesitation, go for the humour of its people.

It is a subtle art form rightly held by all true Cork people to be vastly superior to that of any other city in the world, yet there is no mention of it in Cork’s biggest year ever... not a sausage.

I was expecting, at the very least, a gala concert featuring the great Niall Toibín, Cha and Miah, Billa O’Connell, Paddy Comerford, Mon Murphy, Danny la Rue and the many other great comedians Cork has produced. I thought there would be joke-telling competitions, humorous essay-writing and all the rest of it, but no.

However, it’s not too late yet, with two months to go, so how about organising a committee?
