McDowell sets his sights on the wrong target

YOUR political reporter Fionnán Sheahan reports Justice Minister Michael McDowell as stating that the new liquor licensing laws are “designed to combat underage binge drinkers” (Irish Examiner, Sept 16).

Has it not occurred to the good minister that young people obtain their booze not from pubs, but from off-licence premises?

The very places that his colleague, Mary Harney, is so fond of opening.
