JOHN Nance Garner, a Texan who was vice-president under Franklin D Roosevelt, at 90, was asked to what he owed his longevity. “Bourbon and Branch,” he replied.

At 99, he was asked the same question, and he responded: “Layin’ off Bourbon and Branch.”

He died a few months later.
