Trial by media

A FEW years ago a woman accused Cardinal Roger Mahony of sexually assaulting her and the Los Angeles Times (LAT) put the story on the front page.

Trial by media

A few weeks later the police announced that the complaint was without merit and the LAT put the report on page 17 (or thereabouts). You will note that the LAT wanted the cardinal to be guilty or, to put it another way, they wanted a woman to have been sexually assaulted so that they could scream abuse at the Catholic Church.

Is it surprising then that the cardinal was reluctant to release the names of priests who have been accused but not convicted of anything? (Irish Examiner, October 14).
