Case for smokers based on fiction

YOU entitled the letter from John Mallon, ‘Passive smoking: fact and fiction’ (Irish Examiner, June 27).

Case for smokers based on fiction

Obviously, the fiction comes from Mr Mallon. He is apparently well-versed in obfuscation.

He asks why there are no death certificates that state, “cause of death: environmental tobacco smoke (ETS).”

I would ask him to present to me a death certificate that states, “killed by automobile.” Actually a death certificate normally outlines a chain of events that led to a person’s death, such as “trauma to internal organs, leading to internal bleeding and blood loss, causing swelling of the brain and, finally, pneumonia.” So, in Mr Mallon’s logic, no one has ever died as a result of being hit by an automobile.

Countless scientific studies have proven that toxic tobacco smoke causes many illnesses and death.

It’s a safe bet that any ‘study’ that finds toxic tobacco smoke is not a problem is financed and controlled by the tobacco people.

I have news for Mr Mallon: smoking around others is not legal. It has never been legal to subject others to the carcinogens and poisons in tobacco smoke.

I agree that smokers have always been persecuted. The tobacco people deprived smokers and other tobacco users of their true right to a product which is not addictive, defective and lethal, when used as intended. And it has never been legal to poison people, no matter how slowly you do it.

My wife and I are finalising our plans to visit Ireland. When creating our itinerary, our first consideration was that Ireland has shown it is a progressive country by banning toxic tobacco smoke nearly everywhere. We say “thank you” for recognising that all of us have a right to smoke-free air.
